Gabriel Bass’s designs reflect the convergence of the elements, the notion of human creation using the sculptural tools of natural force. He creates much of his work by blowing hot glass into careful sculpted wood moulds that have been soaking for hours or days in water. Fire and smoke engulf the artist as he continues to blow steadily into the mould below. The glass is then opened on the other side, while the shape achieved in the mould remains. The glass is then carefully annealed in the kiln and then either displayed in sets or affixed into the original wooden mould, which has further undergone a careful drying process, sanding and finish work. Both the process and the final product represent the interaction of positive and negative shapes that can only be obtained with the relationship between wood and glass. Much of the work is custom made and allows the client to contribute to the design process.
